Why VW's Golf Is Car of the Year Car for the Course: Our Champion Is a Jackrabbit of All Trades By Rory Jurnecka | Photography by Julia LaPalme It might be hard to believe, but in a four-decade lifespan, Volkswagen's Golf has only run away with our Golden Calipers once before, in 1985. Also interesting is the fact that the GTI that won our Car of the Year award 30 years ago was deemed our "domestic" COTY at a time when we still categorized imported cars into their own award. The domestic tag was because the 1985 GTI was constructed at Volkswagen's now-defunct Pennsylvania plant, which was shuttered three years later. A lot has changed in the intervening years. Volkswagen is once again producing cars in the U.S., and the Volkswagen Golf, including the GTI, is once again our Car of the Year. For 2015, the Golf was a near-unanimous decision choice among our judges by virtue of its strong performance in each of our six Car of the Year criteria. The Mustang King Cobra Returns With 600+ hp Ford Racing Introduces Bolt-On Parts Kit At SEMA Show A crowd 15- or 20-people deep cheered as the 2015 Ford Mustang King Cobra was unveiled at the annual SEMA show. They had reason to cheer, as the automaker said the King Cobra checks in with more than 600 hp and runs the quarter-mile in less than 11 seconds. They started with a 5-liter, 625hp supercharged V-8 with a cat-back exhaust. Then they add a FR2 Drag Pack-equipped chassis including FR3 Handling Pack, heavy-duty half-shafts, bushing kits, 6-piston calipers, sway bars, dampers and springs, and Recaro seats and a short-throw shifter on the inside, King Cobra etched wheels (which not everybody is in love with) outside. Wrapping it all together is the scale-filled cobra-skin paint graphics.
