The Big Test: 2014/2015 Hatchbacks -
Ford, Hyundai, Kia, Mazda, and VW

These practical daily drivers are a fun answer
for many commuting problems. Which car is tops?

So, you're in the market for a sensibly sized and reasonably styled hatchback. You want to be able to hunt parallel parking spaces without anxiety ("I should have bought a smaller car…"), accommodate four adults in comfort, and be able to inflate the cargo volume at the drop of a second row. And you want to spend less than $30K? Smart thinking, customer. Our Big Test's compact-class hatches are, by straight averages, $27,332 as tested, and boast 60 percent more storage area than their respective sedan counterparts despite measuring 9 inches shorter in exterior length. And that's before folding the back seat.

The comparison rules were simple. We asked the handful of C-segment hatchback manufacturers to share their booty, as long as our haul came with backup cameras, navigation, keyless entry, and automatic transmissions. We encouraged automakers to put their best feet forward and nearly had our entire desired competitive pool -- we were willing to make an exception for the Subaru Impreza (no keyless entry, full stop) but the delivered test car also didn't have nav, and Mitsubishi didn't have a Lancer Sportback for us.

Nevertheless, our well-appointed quintet represented the heart of this specific market: Ford Focus Titanium, Hyundai Elantra GT, Kia Forte5 SX, Mazda3 with the Grand Touring option, and Volkswagen Golf SEL.

All-New 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata Revealed At Last!

Lower Hood, Body a Few of Many Bold Changes for Mazda's Classic

The wait for the 2016 Mazda Miata is over. The fourth-generation roadster was revealed last night at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, with popular '80s band Duran Duran providing the soundtrack. These images give us our first glimpse at the iconic sports car.

The 2016 MX-5 ditches the smiley front end of the outgoing generation for a decidedly less friendly-looking Kodofied face. Overall, the car is wider and lower than the model it replaces, with a hood that's "impossibly low," according to Mazda design director Derek Jenkins. Unlike the current car's relatively flat hood, the 2016 model's bonnet features more curves, which flow into the fenders and across the doors until finally angling up over the rear fenders. The front fenders were pulled back to give the car a more cab-rearward look. The rear end features a dramatic taper, which helps accentuate the wide fenders and redesigned taillights.

The new 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata brings the roadster back to its roots, with an even more driver-focused experience. Now paired with a Skyactiv drivetrain, the new Miata offers a balance of performance and efficiency. A new chassis is said to be 14 percent lighter than before, yet stronger and more rigid. In total, the 2016 MX-5 Miata is 220.5 pounds lighter than its predecessor.

Check out photos of the 2016 Mazda Miata in the gallery below and keep watching this space for more details.
