2014 BMW 2 Series Coupe First Look

The 2002, Take Two?

Evoking a legendary number is a dangerous tactic -- it can lead to big expectations. No NHL player would dream of wearing Wayne Gretzky's number 99, and a rookie NBA player better be able to back-up wearing Michael Jordan's 23. And yet just four pages into the 2014 BMW 2 Series Coupe's 20-page long press release BMW makes its first of several mentions of the legendary 1968 2002. Could the 2014 BMW 2 Series have what it takes to follow in the classic coupe's footsteps?

At the face of it, the new 2014 BMW 2 Series, which will debut at the 2014 Detroit auto show, certainly has the goods to back up the 2002 connection. There are going to be two versions of the rear-drive coupe: the 2014 BMW 228i, and the 2014 BMW M235i – the very first M Performance Bimmer offered in the U.S.

Lincoln MKZ Full Line First Test

This Week: The Lincoln MKZ, Aston Martin V12 Vantage S, and Will America Get A Scirocco?

2013 Lincoln MKZ Full Line First Test

Is Lincoln Bringing A Knife To A Gunfight?

The new 2014 Lincoln MKZ aimed to change the perception that the automaker's models are merely "Ford-plus."

Now, the MKZ does not claim to be a sports sedan, but it's still worthwhile to compare its performance to the rest of its competitive class. All of those objective test measurements lag significantly behind the rest of the segment, in most cases even using the numbers generated by the Super Sport tires.

Per our most recent comparison tests, only the Acura TSX V-6 pulled a lower skid pad number and only the defunct Infiniti G25 was slower to 60 mph and through the quarter-mile. The also defunct previous-generation Lexus IS 250 was dead even with the MKZ to 60 mph and a tenth of a second behind in the quarter-mile.

The Acura and Infiniti likewise needed greater distance to stop from 60 mph, and were joined in this by the Volvo S60 T-5. The MKZ was otherwise outperformed by those cars as well as the Audi A4 Quattro 2.0-liter turbo, BMW 328i, the Buick Regal GS, the Cadillac ATS 2.0-liter Turbo and the old Lexus IS 250.

If there's a category where the MKZ shines brighter, it's with the Hybrid model. Of course, that's because almost nobody makes a competitor. Those that do again tend to outperform the Lincoln, though not as handily.
