15 Cars We Waited For That Never Arrived

Cue Carly Simon and 'Anticipation' (Google It, Kids)

The automotive industry is packed with creative individuals chock-full of ideas. It is also a sprawling, capital-intensive, international business that has to make money. Consequently, many creative ideas can never spread their wings and fly into full-scale production.

We've compiled 15 cars, trucks, and SUVs from the previous 15 years that were supposed to be roadworthy and in dealerships or available on Craigslist by now, if not in their presented form then very close to it. Key words: supposed to. Things don't always go according to plan. The past decade and a half has witnessed some of the best-intentioned product strategies deserted. Tons of new concept vehicles that theoretically hint at what's on the horizon debut each year. A bunch are blatant team-building exercises (Dodge Tomahawk, Mini and Smart scooters). Others are perpetual teases destined to live only on top 10 lists of concepts that should be built (Jeep pickup trucks, small, sporty Nissans). Some are ready for prime time with a swap of side mirrors and wheels and tires.

These 15 vehicles felt so close yet so far away.

Mercedes-AMG C63 S: A Rolling Riot Act

2015 Mercedes-AMG C63 S First Test Review

The Riot Act

Unless you were involved in the Birkenhead, U.K., police strike of 1919, you've never actually been read the Riot Act, at least not in an official capacity. Because the act remained in effect for nearly 260 years and was copied by many British colonies, the colloquialism "read the Riot Act" is still used widely to suggest a serious scolding. Germany was never a British colony, nor did it institute a copycat act, but if it had, the Mercedes-Benz C63 S AMG would likely make liberal use of it.

The Riot Act, ostensibly, was intended to empower local authorities to break up groups of rabble-rousers with force should they fail to disperse after a specific proclamation was made informing them of the invocation of the act. The modern automotive equivalent of such a proclamation would be, quite simply, the C63 revving its angry, snarling, twin-turbo V-8 at the gathered rabble of boosted six-cylinders and an un-boosted V-8 or two. With 503 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque courtesy of its S Model programming, the C63 S is unquestioningly carrying the biggest stick in the room.

HOW BIG IS THAT STICK? Find out here.

German Fighter: 2016 Cadillac ATS-V

Our First Test of the 2016 Cadillac ATS-V Sedan Auto and Manual Coupe

Gunning For The Germans

Beating the Germans is never easy — just ask the French — yet automakers constantly set their sights on what's become the holy grail of German sports cars: the BMW M3. Many have tried to unseat the king, but thus far the likes of Cadillac, Lexus, and Volvo have yet to definitively succeed. Where others have failed, General Motors hopes the new 2015 Cadillac ATS-V provides the magic bullet. After spending a couple weeks with an automatic-equipped ATS-V Sedan and a manual-equipped ATS-V Coupe, I think it's safe to say that the General is on to something.

I imagine most are already intimately familiar with the ATS-V, Cadillac's hot new thing (along with the related CTS-V), so I'll offer up a quick refresher of Caddy's M-fighter. Built on GM's lightweight, rear-drive Alpha platform (which Cadillac will share with the next-generation Chevrolet Camaro), the ATS-V is powered by a 3.6-liter, twin-turbo V-6 that produces 464 hp and 445 lb-ft of torque. A V-8 will probably fit under the hood, but sadly none is offered. Buyers have the choice of a six-speed manual or a quick-shifting eight-speed automatic in addition to the choice of two- and four-door body styles.

HOW QUICK WERE THEY? Find out here.
